Intervention analysis in seasonal adjustment
Article Abstract:
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is using intervention analysis to calculate seasonal price adjustments and to account for nonseasonal level shifts that can significantly alter seasonal averages. BLS is using a Canadian program called X-11-ARIMA to measure seasonal adjustments. Intervention analysis supplements the program's findings by calculating the effect that events such as tax increases, international conflict or embargoes have on commodity prices. The Consumer Price Indexes are made more accurate through intervention analysis.

The impact of the 1998 revision on seasonal adjustment
Article Abstract:
Revisions made to the Consumer Price Indexes in 1998 will allow 73 component series to be aggregated to calculate the seasonally adjusted U.S. city average All items index, beginning with data for Jan 1998. Before the revisions, 60 component series were aggregated. Ninety-five percent of the All items index weight can now be used in seasonal adjustment. Components for seasonal aggregation to All items are listed for the new and old series.

Intervention analysis in seasonal adjustment
Article Abstract:
Intervention analysis is used in seasonal adjustment of Consumer Price Indexes to exclude nonseasonal economic events prior to calculation of seasonal adjustment factors. The X-12-ARIMA program is used to model unusual events as part of the process of seasonal adjustment. Identified events that caused level shifts are listed for the series for which intervention analysis seasonal adjustment methods were applied in Jan 1998.
