Is the Dutch consumer a true Ricardian?
Article Abstract:
The intertemporal optimisation approach was used to determine if the Ricardian equivalence, which is characterized by infinite planning horizons and a perfect capital market, is advocated in the Dutch economy. The result of the study revealed that Ricardian equivalence is not applicable in the Dutch economy as evidenced by lack of liquidity constraints and infinite planning horizons. The Dutch consumer falls more into the New Keynesian persuasion, which suggests that market imperfections and disconnected family ties are essential in determining consumption fluctuations.
