LaGrange, Georgia's "field of dreams": economic development and telecommunications in a rural area
Article Abstract:
Economic developers in LaGrange, GA, are relying on modern telecommunications to attract back-office companies to the city. The city initiated a program in the 1980s to diversify from its textile industry manufacturing base, but has continued to experience negative net employment. Back-office companies are those that do not deal directly with customers but support front-line staff. Their operations may be located far from front-line functions with the use of modern telecommunications technology. The annual total revenue for such operations is estimated at over $40 billion and is growing at 13%. It is this market that LaGrange's economic developers are trying to tap.
