Labour demand and the source of adjustment costs
Article Abstract:
A study of the dynamics of labor demand and the adjustment costs employers incur as a result is carried out via an analysis of data gathered from one hospital and three manufacturing firms. The adjustment costs are either net costs, which are those incurred while adjusting employment, and gross costs, which are the expenses that accrue from the hiring and termination of workers. The existence of business cycles that sometimes deviate from their expected form can be partly attributed to the presence of these two kinds of adjustment costs.

The timing of work over time
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the timing of work in the US between 1973 and 1991. The pattern of work timing at the aggregate level during the period was examined, including its proximate causes. The distribution of work time and its association with changes in economic inequality was also analyzed. Results indicated a decline in evening and night work between 1973 and 1991. Findings also showed the inferiority of evening and night work based on rising real wages and earnings inequality.

The size and sources of economic rents in a developing country manufacturing labour market
Article Abstract:
The components of rent to labor and a rent sharing theory for wage levels are examined by analyzing data from Ghana's manufacturing industry from 1992 to 1994. There are three sources of rent which have a positive effect on wage levels; unionization, the issue of foreign versus domestic ownership of firms and the fact that older firms have the ability to pay higher wages. It is concluded that there is a basis for a rent sharing component of wage determination in Ghana's labor market.
