The Spanish test: the top Presidential candidates are courting Latino voters by speaking their language - or at least trying to; a panel of renowned linguists rates their performances in two recent speeches
Article Abstract:
Three university professors of Spanish, Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria, William R. Blue and James Lantolf, evaluated speeches that Al Gore and George W. Bush delivered in Spanish during Jun 1999 campaign stops. Gore received points for getting fricatives right, but was criticized for his too English-sounding vowels and intonation. Bush is fluent in Spanish and avoids glottal stops but he makes grammar mistakes.
