Looking again at Iraq: commercial law issues
Article Abstract:
Iraq is being predicted to be the target market of most Western companies with the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 986, also called the oil-for-food program. The country will have various business opportunities as economic sanctions against Iran are expected to be lifted. Iraq's legal system is basically distinct from other Arab countries mainly because it is a combination of Islamic and continental systems. The Civil Code proves to be the most significant existing law in the country while the Revolutionary Command Council is regarded as the supreme government authority.

Agents in military contracts: evolving Kuwaiti policy; confusion over ministry of defense change from prohibition to requiring agents
Article Abstract:
The Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense has modified its policy on agents as a result of the Persian Gulf War. The MOD will no longer negotiate with foreign firms that do not have a Kuwaiti agent. The former policy stated that defense contractors could not use intermediaries or sales agents. The MOD's problems with communication with foreign military contractors appear to have contributed to the policy change. The Kuwaiti government, however, seems to have a need to involve the private sector in agency activities. The MOD needs to clarify its new policy.

Bahrain liberalizes commercial agency law
Article Abstract:
Bahrain passed in April 1998 significant changes to its commercial agency law, easing several measures and eliminating the statutory requirement of exclusivity for domestic commercial agents. The changes should carry a significant influence on future Bahraini commercial agency agreements, especially on the settlement of disputes ensuing from their termination or nonrenewal.
