Monsanto and American Home Products call off merger
Article Abstract:
Monsanto Co. of St. Louis, MO, and American Home Products Corp. (AHP) of Madison, NJ, mutually agreed to end their merger on Oct. 12, 1998. The companies agreed on Jun. 1, 1998, to merge in a deal valued at $34 billion. According to the companies, they cancelled the merger because it was no longer in the best interests of their respective shareholders. Monsanto and AHP loss a combined market capitalization of almost $14.6 billion on the day of the announcement of the merger's cancellation. In addition, Monsanto's stock decreased by 26.6%, while AHP's dropped by 10%.
