More creativity to come, says bank chief

The Philippine government is looking to line up about 20 national privatization projects in an attempt to attain industrializing-country status by 2000. The private sector is expected to contribute most of the funding to free government resources. Private funding is expected to come in the form of foreign business partners, local joint-venture partnerships, venture capital funds and through local capital markets.

A global mentality

Three of India's engineering firms, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., Larsen and Toubro, and Thermax Ltd. are undergoing restructuring plans in order to successfully compete in a global market. The companies face economic slowdowns at home, lack of investment and an increase in capital good imports, however the existing tariff structure does not provide fair competition.

Quality goods break down barriers
Article Abstract:
India's engineering companies are changing the way importers are viewing manufactured goods and consumer durables. Economic slowdowns at home are forcing companies to expand sales in Europe, Japan and Southeast Asia. Support from the government in the capital goods market promoted efficiency and competition within the domestic market. Now India is intensifying trade.
