Negative income taxes and household transition dynamics: evidence from the Canadian MINCOME experiment
Article Abstract:
This article examines the connection between welfare and marital stability by using data from the Manitoba Income Maintenance Experiment (MINCOME), a Canadian experiment aimed at testing the concept of guaranteed income. The authors find that marital splits were not encouraged by guaranteed income support, but rather supplied a stabilizing factor to marriages; they question the notion that welfare creates dependency, and assert that the program relieved financial stress from low-income families.

Household survey data from developing countries: progress and prospects
Article Abstract:
The adequacy of household surveys conducted in developing countries is evaluated. Adequacy is determined by using seven factors, namely; country coverage, topical coverage, timeliness, sample, comparability, access and documentation, and quality. Results show the need for researchers and data-gatherers to increase data sets and use sophisticated econometric techniques to provide policymakers with better tools for policy analysis.

Are consumption taxes regressive?
Article Abstract:
Assessing the impact of consumption taxes on Australian households is less informative than considering the overall impact of all taxes. Relating the cost of a single tax to gross income rather than the relevant tax base is too restrictive. Overall tax impact consideration should also incorporate how income taxes are applied to investment income.
