Nonmonetary effects of the financial crisis in the Great Depression
Article Abstract:
A vector autoregression (VAR) analysis of the financial performance of banking institutions during the Great Depression reveals that only when bank failures became chronic in nature did they began to make a substantial effect on the US economy. The VAR analysis suggests that short-term bank failures are of little impact to the economy as a whole. It is similarly suggested that government intervention be done should chronic bank failures occur in order to bring stability to the system.
