Nonsense regressions between integrated processes of different orders
Article Abstract:
Asymptotic distributions generated when linear regressions are performed in the levels of stochastically independent integrated time series are analyzed. Orders of integration of the dependent and independent variables are assumed to be different. Theoretical results are compared with the Monte Carlo results reported by Banerjee et al. (1993). Results show that problems encountered when performing the linear regressions are not restricted to spurious regressions produced by regressing independent series of the same order on each other but that the problems have to be confronted when the integrated processes of different orders are regressed.
