On the rationality of mutually immiserating coercion
Article Abstract:
The behavior of certain individuals or firms to pursue relative power even when it means a diminution not only of their adversaries' wealth but also of theirs is consistent with economic utility theory. This tendency, as distinguished from the absolute pursuit of positional goods or status, is rational as long as the relative influence or power gained offsets the reduction in wealth.
