Outlook for the Saudi economy: likely to gain momentum in '97

Prospects for the Saudi Arabian economy for 1997 appear favorable. Large projects are lined up in oil, gas, petrochemicals, electric power generation and telecommunications, while small- and medium-scale manufacturing and service enterprises abound. Saudi Arabia reported a surplus in balance of payments, fiscal reform measures were successful and inflation is at less than 1%. Real GDP growth is placed at 5% to 6%, while per capita GDP is on an upturn. The country also boasts of a robust riyal and liquid financial markets.

Saudi Arabia's projected economic performance in 1997 remains positive while investors' confidence in the economy becomes stronger. The anticipated growth in Saudi Arabia's economic subsectors, oil and gas production and real growth is expected to greatly contribute in its economic expansion in 1997. The country's plan to increase the participation of the private sector in many of its industries, except oil and gas, is also expected to propel local and foreign investments in Saudi Arabia.

Economic imperatives in the Kingdom and the role of the private sector: exploiting comparative advantages

The Saudi Arabian economic foundations are solid and it possesses a tremendous capacity to achieve Saudi Arabia's enormous economic potential. The private sector will have to grow in order to fully capitalize on the Kingdom's true so-called comparative advantages, aside from oil and oil products. It is best to work together and cooperate with one another to maximize one another's strengths.
