The UK market for pickles, chutneys and relish is predicted to be worth 169.3 million pounds sterling, at 1999 prices, in 2003. Some 145.6 million pounds sterling was spent in the sector in 1998. Retail sales of sour pickles accounted for 55.6% of total sales in the sector, for 1998. Own label brands accounted for 55.3% of sour pickle sales in 1998, with Haywards having the largest share of branded products at 12.9%. Sales of chutney have increased by 49.1% between 1994-1998, with both traditional and ethnic chutney proving popular. Relish sales have declined during 1994-99.
