Article Abstract:
Both consumer price indexes (CPIs) rose 0.3 % in October 1996. The CPI for urban consumers was at 158.3 before seasonal adjustment and 3.0% higher than October 1995. The food and beverage industry index increased 0.6% with an increase in grocery food prices contributing to an overall 3.4% increase since June, 1996. The housing index increased 0.3% after an increase of 0.2% in September. The index for transportation and entertainment rose 0.1 %. Clothing and upkeep increased 0.5% following a decline of 1.4% in August. Medical care costs rose 0.2% to 3.2% above last year's index.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) for All Urban Consumers went down 0.1% in Dec 1995, while the Consumer Price Index (CPI-W) for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers was unchanged. The CPI-U rose to 153.5 without seasonal adjustment, an increase of 2.5% for the past 12 months. The CPI-W at 150.9 was 2.5% higher than Dec 1994. Smallest 12 month gains were for apparel and upkeep, 0.1% in the CPI-U and 0.2% in the CPI-W. Largest 12 month gains were for medical costs: 4% in the CPI-W and 3.9% in the CPI-U. Energy lost 1.5% in the CPI-W and 1.3% in the CPI-U.

Article Abstract:
Both consumer prices indexes (CPIs) remained unchanged for December, 1996, prior to seasonal adjustments. As it did in the three previous months, the seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3%. The food and beverage index increased by 0.1% in December, while the transportation index rose 0.6% following an increase of 0.2% in November. Gasoline prices rose 12.4% over 1996. The seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) rose 0.3%.
