Religion and modernization in Europe
Article Abstract:
The anthropological dimension of Max Weber's sociology of religion is largely neglected, although secular-religious forces play an important part in allowing us to understand the processes of modernization within Europe. The secularization of Europe in the modern age is often portrayed as a process of reason overcoming religion. However, the history of the modern age also has its own secular history of religion and secular-religious forces of faith: science as a secular force of faith; history as a secular history of salvation; and a political messianism.
