The UK market for rice and rice-based ready meals was valued at 150 million pounds sterling in 1993, up 50% from 1989. The 1994 market is expected to reach 162 million pounds sterling. The popularity of ethnic foods has increased demand for rice and it is regarded as an essential part of a healthy diet. Short grain rice is the only sector of the market to have declined, with long grain rice dominating the market and having a 71% share of value sales in 1993. Master Foods' Uncle Ben's brand leads the long-grain rice sector with a 21% value share. The rice market is forecast to reach 199.2 million pounds sterling by 1998.
