The results of a survey of over 7,000 small businesses are presented, based on research conducted during April 2001. The report indicates a slow and steady economic growth but highlights key weaknesses. Borrowing is seen to remain heavy and it is predicted that an increase in interest rates will influence profits.

Small business outlook
Article Abstract:
In a small-business survey conducted in August 2003, 18% reported that the current period was a good time to expand, up two points from July 2003. The outlook for small business conditions also rose by four points to a seasonally adjusted net 42 percent of all firms.

Most important problem facing small business
Article Abstract:
The poll found that 24 percent voted "cost and availability of insurance" as the most important problem faced by small business owners. In 2004, higher premiums and an upswing in the stock market are expected to slow the pace of insurance cost increases.
