Stabilization and growth in transition economies: the early experience
Article Abstract:
The process of economic transition in Eastern Europe has brought to the fore the essential bond between stabilization and growth. The experience of most transition economies validate the assumption that for growth prospects to be realized, annual inflation should not exceed 50 percent. Since 1989, the East European transition economies have witnessed substantial reduction in inflation rates as fiscal deficits have been effectively contained. A pegged exchange rate, together with structural reforms further aid disinflation and the revival of growth through stabilized economic processes.

Socialist economy reform: lessons of the first three years
Article Abstract:
Economic reforms in China and Eastern Europe offer an opportunity to compare the effectiveness of gradualism and shock therapy and the effects of the political context on reform. Big bang reforms are not connected to decreases in productivity, and some countries using radical reform show early indications of success. Mass privatization has not succeeded, but an eclectic approach using a voucher scheme could increase the movement to the private sector. Some very large industries will need reorganization before being privatized.
