Strategic management at the point of inflection: systems, complexity and competence theory
Article Abstract:
The theory of competence-based strategic management has the objective of developing independent, self-managing organizational processes that ensure proper interpretation and faster response to complex and dynamic environments. It has four cornerstones which include managers' holistic view of their organizations, cognitive demands placed on strategic managers, characterization of organizations as open-systems and representation of the environment as dynamic. The theory implies that designing organizations as self-managing systems represent a dominant logic for strategic management.

Competence-based competition analyzes the three basic elements of core competence. Core competence is the collective knowledge of an organization particularly in coordinating various production skills and technologies. Every core competence is made up of resources, capabilities and competencies. Resources are tangible assets that are used in adjusting to market opportunities. Capabilities are process-based resources and competencies are combinations of resources and capabilities that enhance value.
