Optical goods and eyecare
Article Abstract:
The value of the UK eyecare and optical goods market was 2,020 million pounds sterling in 1998. This represents growth of 33% over five years. A major factor in the market is the growing number of consumers using contact lenses or glasses. The ageing population has contributed to this growth. Major players in spectacles and contact lenses include Norville Group and Essilor, but Allergan is important in the lens solution market, and Crookes leads the market in other eyecare solutions. However optical retailers, including Dolland & Aitchison and Specsavers, have a higher profile amongst consumers.

Sunglasses
Article Abstract:
The sunglasses market in the United Kingdom (UK) was worth 69 million pounds sterling in 1997 and it is expected to increase to 75 million pounds in 1998. Consumers are most concerned about eye protection against UVA and UVB rays and also their fashionable image. The UK market is affected by the weather but it is expected to grow steadily between 1998 and 2002 because consumers are accepting the advice of health experts. Increasing levels of personal disposable income and more foreign holidays will also benefit the sunglasses market. Sales of cheaper sunglasses is set to decline.
