The Indonesian crisis
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the causes of the Indonesian economic crisis which started as a contagion of the Thai currency crisis in Jul 1997. The weakness of the country's rupiah become apparent from the uncertainty associated with Pres Soeharto's health and his views on the IMF agreements. The investment spending spree in the private sector also contributed to the fall of the country's currency. It is anticipated that adjustments in the rate of exchange between the rupiah and the American dollar will make life more difficulty for the local population in Indonesia.
