The Russian economy: prospects for macroeconomic policy
Article Abstract:
This article examines economic reforms in Russia in possible avenues for growth in the future, reflecting on positive results from 1999, which included higher increases in GDP than expected and positive economic growth from increased investment. Issues include the increasing stability of the economy after the 1998 financial crisis, growth in real incomes and the revival of the consumer market, favorable foreign trading conditions, reduction of the budget deficit; on the negative side, the author asserts that the government did not resolve any major economic problems which indicates a need for a major shift in macroeconomic policy by examining structural problems of the economy, suggests strategy options, policy measures, and long term prospects which includes the need to manage human capital more effectively.

This article evaluates efforts at economic reform and socioeconomic development in Russia and examines causes of the financial crisis. Issues include the lack of impact the reforms have had on trade, production and financial activity of enterprises, no formation of a new organizational structure for production and the absence of professional entrepreneurs.
