Celestial marriage and earthly rents: interests and the prohibition of polygamy
Article Abstract:
The imposition of political restrictions on the practice of polygamy within the Mormon Church was the product of rent-seeking bahavior of potential beneficiaries of the Edmonds Act of 1882. Restrictions were imposed prior to the American Civil War mainly because polygamy lessened the welfare of most men who happened to possess the franchise. The practice of polygamy generated benefits for women including wider household specialization.
