The evolution of retirement: summary of a research project
Article Abstract:
The number of retirees and elderly individuals in the US has been steadily increasing since the 1880s. Analysis of trends show the Labor Force Participation rates of men over the age of 65 has been declining in countries such as France, Germany, and the United Kingdom in the same period as well. While factors such as assets, private pensions, and Social Security benefits influence retirement patterns, they cannot account for retirement rates for those over the age of 64. Chronic diseases also cannot be used to explain the changes in retirement patterns since their effects have declined from 1910 to 1983 from 75% to 40%.

The unequal work day: a long term view
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the unequal work day's evolution between the 1880s and 1990s reveals that factors such as technological change and labor legislation may account for differences in the work hours of different work deciles. The study also shows that weekly earnings disparities in the 1880s would have been much greater than it actually was and that a contemporary inegalitarian work rule would magnify income disparities instead of equalizing it.
