The impact of minimum wage on the wages of the low-paid: evidence from the Wage Boards and Councils
Article Abstract:
The UK Wage Boards and Councils (WBC) has failed to improve the earnings of low paid workers. Data from New Earnings Panel Dataset from 1975 to 1990, excluding self-employed, indicate that workers covered by WBCs are the same if not below those who are not under WBCs. The failure is attributed to the ineffective enforcement of the wages set by the WBCs wherein wage violators were given low fines if and when prosecuted. The findings belie the assumption that legislated minimum wage would increase wages above those in intervention-free labor markets.

Competitiveness policy in the 1990s
Article Abstract:
An analysis of UK trade policy reveals that current competitiveness evaluation techniques of the government are faulty and that measures must be taken to address industrial research efforts, education and training. The study also reveals that six broad approaches could enhance competitiveness policy of the UK and these approaches include focusing on inward investment, formulating changes in corporate and individual taxation, increasing public investment, increasing macroeconomic stability and formulating institutional changes.
