The regulation of British Telecom: an event study
Article Abstract:
An empirical analysis of the effect of the post-privatization regime on telecommunications stock-market performance in the UK indicates that telecommunications regulation has not been captured in an overall manner. Despite this, a heterogeneous pattern of regulatory activity has in some cases reflected producer interests. It appears that the effects of regulation show a soft attitude towards British Telecom in the period to 1995, when a strengthening of regulation took place. There was no evidence of overall capture of the regulatory regime by British Telecom in the period 1984 to 1996.

The economic analysis of franchise contracts
Article Abstract:
Franchising involves a symbiotic relationship that tends to restrain opportunism from both parties. Dealership and business format franchises are becoming similar. Transaction cost analysis and agency theory are two useful ways of studying franchising. Geographical spread of units is one factor that appears to foster franchising. Operating efficiency can be improved by franchising. Further research into hostage analysis would be fruitful.
