Why do women married to unemployed men have low participation rates?
Article Abstract:
The employment participation of women married to working men and those whose husbands are unemployed are compared. German panel data from 1983 to 1987 are analyzed to determine whether the employment status of husbands stand for female characteristics associated with lower participation. The impact of husbands' unemployment benefits on wives' motivation to work is also examined.

The study focuses not only on the US but also on nine other countries to generate international evidence. Results show a strong relationship between large deficits and higher interest rates for all 10 countries between 1970 and 1993.
