World economy
Article Abstract:
World gross domestic product by the end of 1999 was 3.25% higher than at the end of 1998. Growth is forecast to continue at the same pace in the medium term. All the leading regions of the world are likely to see quite strong growth in 2000. However, it is important to be aware of a number of potential risks, including financial imbalances in the US. The euro remains very unstable, and rising US interest rates mean that interest differentials will probably move against the euro over the period to mid-2000. The Japanese economy is being boosted by rapid recovery in the rest of Asia.

Article Abstract:
There are uncertain prospects for the world economy, with a danger of a downturn becoming a more established recession. Any long-term recession would probably start in the US, but would affect the rest of the world too. In Europe, real interest rates must fall substantially in order to avoid the danger of a long-term recession.
