Yemen's privatization program: 100 public enterprises by 2000
Article Abstract:
Yemen's privatization program is being held down by problems involving land claims and valuation, labor redundancy and transparency. The country plans to privatize some 100 public enterprises covering 16 business sectors by 2000. The Yemeni government hopes to accomplish a number of important goals through privatization. These include raising revenue and reducing the cost of government, boosting the economy of the former South Yemen and increasing middle class participation in the economy. However, corruption could present a serious danger to the privatization campaign.
