Irrational debates

A second world war of words
Article Abstract:
Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies Deborah Lipstadt felt she had no choice but to go to court when she was accused of libel by British Historian David Irving. The case is being heard during Jan 2000, at the Royal Courts of Justice, London, England. Lipstadt is fully supported by her university, and Penguin who published her book, 'Denying the Holocaust.' In the book Lipstadt suggested Irving distorted the history of the Holocaust. She felt the people who denied the Holocaust ever happened were beginning to be taken too seriously.

Islands of sanity in a highly charged atmosphere
Article Abstract:
The key element of fanaticism is the wish to make others change, according to Israeli academic and novelist Amos Oz, who lectures in literature at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev. He feels that universities can play a significant role in the battle for peaceful co-existence. He believes that universities offer a forum in which conflict can be studied in a logical way and where differing views can be discussed positively. He regards compromise as the supreme achievement.
