Alumni call for visitor to allay finance fears
Article Abstract:
A group of Oxford University alumni have demanded that assurances be made regarding the governance and financial viability of Harris Manchester College following a special investigation by The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES). A group of 30 alumni have sent an open letter to Sir Eric Anderson, the provost of Eton College who, as the quasi-judicial visitor for Harris Manchester, deals with complaints against it, asking what steps are to be taken to resolve the issues raised by the THES investigation. Prizes lost in 'golden triangle'
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to allegations of bias leveled against the British Academy (BA) in relation to its award of grants are examined. An analysis conducted by the THES of all fellowship awards and research readership made since the BA started publishing a list of its winners in 1997 reveals that 78% of the awards have gone to men, with women taking only 22% if the awards despite making up 40% of the academic community that the BA serves. The analysis also reveals that only 1.6% of the awards have gone to academics from new universities, despite these universities accounting for over 50% of the sector.
