An analysis of the distinct features of the Chinese script is presented. Although scholars have provided contrasting opinions appreciating or criticizing Chinese writing, its ability to express ideas 'directly' has greatly influenced Chinese intellectual and educational traditions.

Mother tongue twisted by drive for global gains

The drive for recruiting international students, mainly for financial gains, is affecting the quality of the English language. A uniform, if simpler, version of English for the benefit of foreign students is needed to maintain the standard of the language.
