Belarus controls online traffic, blocks sites and monitors its students
Article Abstract:
Alaksandr Lukashenka, President of Belarus, has introduced regulations which forces all information websites operating in Belarus to register and operate under state control. The move is part of efforts to ensure that revolutions such as those that occurred in the Ukraine and Georgia do not occur in Belarus. In practice, monitoring of the Internet is patchy but the knowledge that the rules exist means that students feel uneasy about using university computers.

Scientists risk prosecution
Article Abstract:
Russian Duma member Anatoly Lokot revealed in a 2007 radio interview that the Russian authorities' indifference towards science is forcing scholars to seek Western funding, putting them at risk of charges of espionage. Although there have been protests from Russian human-rights campaigners due to several cases of researchers being accused of espionage, fellow academics mostly remain silent for fear of facing similar charges.

Belarus police pursue dissident draft dodgers
Article Abstract:
Young male Belarussian students, who have gone abroad to study after expulsion from home universities, are being pursued by police for failing to complete compulsory military service. Critics believe that the Belarussian regime is effectively preventing higher education abroad for these activist students for political reasons, who would be ordered back to Belarus and face criminal charges for evading the military draft.
