Beset by bunk and flummery
Article Abstract:
Author Alan Garner has been very pleased with the results of Neil Philips's essay on his work but he is highly critical of other academic's efforts to study his books. He suggests the requirement for academics to produce papers has led to the production of academic work with little real meaning or content. Garner carries out very careful research for his books which combine history and myth but are set in the present day. They are written for children but Garner dislikes being categorized as a children's author.

Competition in the ranks
Article Abstract:
British universities' research departments are being assessed for excellence, the ratings achieved will determine how much research funding is allocated. The former polytechnics and colleges are also involved, but the same amount of funding is available (600 million pounds sterling.) The government will assess the results closely as they wish to award money only to the projects considered to be of high quality by the assessors.
