Book awards fuel BA's image as old boys' club
Article Abstract:
The row surrounding the contention that the British Academy (BA) is guilty of "old boys' favouritism" has intensified with the discovery that all three of the prestigious book prizes awarded by the academy this year have been awarded to BA fellows, and that out of 2002's 16-strong shortlist, not one female academic was included. Marilyn Strathern, mistress of Girton College, Cambridge and a BA fellow since the 1980s, who sat on the five-strong 2002 prize judging panel, believes that the academy should review its procedures as a result of the scrutiny being afforded its decisions.
