Durham kept schools' cash, centre says

Carol Fitz-Gibbon, a professor of education at Durham University, has accused administrators of withholding UKPd1.6 mil worth of research income given to her research centre - the Curriculum, Evaluation and Management Centre - by primary and secondary schools across the UK in order to reduce the university's financial debt. Fitz-Gibbon claims that the university is conning schools because the money is not going where they intended it to go. A spokesman for Durham claims that the money is being held on the same basis as income from other university departments, in reserve for approved spending. The centre earns UKPd5.5 mil/yr in research income, making it one of the largest educational research groups.

Article Abstract:
Changes planned by the government for university research in the United Kingdom are to be welcomed for several reasons. Universities cannot expect to be protected from the recession which has hit the private sector, and need to consider how to generate wealth. They should identify weaker areas in order to improve their performance, and set up better career structures to attract and retain talent. The research councils involved in funding research should emphasise peer review as a form of quality control, and links should be developed with industry. These are postive developments to bring the academic world up to date.

Article Abstract:
A scheme has been set up at Nottingham University, United Kingdom, to help young lecturers start a research career, by making funds available and providing help with applications. Research councils which fund research often only show interest in later stages of a project, so initial funding can help attract funds from outside. The scheme also helps morale at the Univerisity, and covers a wide range of projects from all disciplines. Those seeking funds have a one in four chance of succeeding.
