Professor of human genetics at University College London Joy Delahanty defends pre-implementation genetic diagnosis, a technique involving removing embryos from a mother's body, testing them for genetic defects, and replacing them to grow normally. She stresses that the technique can only be used for serious genetic disorders and argues that only the most committed couples will make use of it because the process is so long drawn out. She does however concede that she went further than scientists have gone before when she screened an embryo for the gene responsible for a severe form of bowel cancer.

The rocky road to Akmola
Article Abstract:
Akmola, which replaced Almaty as the capital of Kazakhstan in late 1997, is geographically central but a harsh place. Many government officials have objected to the change in capital, and the implications of this move will be felt for many years to come. Almaty remains the unofficial capital of Kazakhstan, and some Kazak officials are only living part-time in Akmola. Some have even returned permanently to Almaty, having found that the promised advantages of Akmola did not materialize. There is a growing emphasis on making money in Kazakhstan, and this means that education is losing its value.
