England gets UKPd10bn spend
Article Abstract:
Spending on higher education in the UK is to increase by UKPd2.3 bil to UKPd9.9 bil 2005, vs UKPd7.6 bil this year, according to details published in the government's white paper on higher education. Education secretary Charles Clarke believes that this additional funding will help the sector go from strength to strength, however Universities UK claims that the higher education sector requires and additional UKPd9.9 bil worth of funding. Key points of the white paper include the expansion of student numbers by 23,000 by 2005; the investment of UKPd3 mil in the development of foundation degrees by 2005; the establishment of up to 70 centres of excellence by 2005 - all of which will receive UKPd500,000/yr; the investment of UKPd246 mil for extra research, concentrated on large 5* departments; the maintenance of funding for the Higher Education Innovation Fund at UKPd20 mil/yr; the creation of a UKPd13.5 mil strategic development fund by 2005 and the additional investment of UKPd9 mil in partnerships for progression in 2004.

Message from the ministry
Article Abstract:
College and university courses should become more vocational, say UK Education Secretary David Blunkett, Lifelong Learning Minister George Mudie and Higher and Further Education Minister Baroness Blackstone. The higher education curriculum will incorporate more work experience and employment skills to meet the demands of the business world, says Blunkett. Universities may have to adapt courses to meet regional training goals, says Mudie. Fifteen thousand additional places will be made available in higher education in 1999 for sub-degree level courses, says Blackstone.
