Exploring pathways in the east
Article Abstract:
A key element in the economic success of countries in east and southeast Asia is thought to be the value that east Asian cultures place on education, but it is not clear which of their education policies have been crucial to that success. Primary and secondary education in China has been neglected in favour of scientific and technological research in a small number of elite universities. The emphasis in Japan is on stiff competition in high schools for places in a small number of elite universities. Hong Kong is keen to increase resources for primary and secondary schools.

Iron fists in velvet gloves
Article Abstract:
Western countries have persistently encouraged China to progress for a hundred years, but reformists are suspicious of the term because of its historical association with revolution. The term should continue to be used to promote developments in thinking as well as in institutions, but progress should also be discussed in respect of its ability to preserve tradition. Material advancement could restore value to Asia's ancient traditions.
