The internet revolution has brought problems including social isolation, the blurring of boundaries between home and work and the divide between those with access to technology and those without. We need to learn from the past and develop policies to deal with the negative side of new technologies.

Oxford's Balliol College has established the Oxford Institute for the Internet and Society, helped along by Stephanie Shirley, a philanthropic entrepreneur and alumnus of the college. The new school is designed to research the Internet's effects on society. One such effect, specifically, is the ability for women to remain gender-anonymous and conduct business fairly and equally.
