HSE to act on staff stress
Article Abstract:
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have made it clear that it is prepared to act against institutions that put academics under so much work pressure that legal health and safety duties are neglected. This warning follows an HSE inspection at Leeds University which found that work-related stress and staff support were poorly managed and that one-third of sick leave was stress-related.

One of the U.K.'s greatest living novelists, Martin Amis, has been appointed as a professor of creative writing at Manchester University. The chance to teach at Manchester appealed him because it will help him discover "what modernity had done to the young"; he is also keen to discover how much of creative writing could be really taught.
