Jobs in Japan go into deep freeze
Article Abstract:
The demand for graduates from employers has dropped in Japan as a result of recession, which has left some 100,000 graduates with no jobs when they graduate. The government is organizing trade fairs and short-term training schemes to help graduates. High school students are becoming less enthusiastic about studying at university, when they see the problems that university graduates have. Universities are launching courses related to careers to boost student numbers.

Gender gap hits economy
Article Abstract:
Female high school students in South Korea are being encouraged to compete for top university places, after the passing of the Women's Development Law. Most of the 35% of women in the 18-21 age group in higher education are enrolled in lower-status junior colleges and teacher training colleges, and there are fewer career options due to employer discrimination. High schools are being called on to encourage women in the sciences, computing and industrial skills.

Here Todai, gone tomorrow
Article Abstract:
In 1991 graduates from Todai (Tokyo University) comprised 59% of Japan's higher civil service entrants. Companies like to employ graduates from the top three universities, Todai, Waseda and Keio, as they hope they have influential connections. Critics say that these universities are recruiting from the richest families and those who send their children to expensive crammers to pass the university entrance exams.
