Law's green border terrier
Article Abstract:
Philippe Sands, reader in international law at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, is reluctant to call himself an environmentalist, pointing out that his interest in environmental law is chiefly academic. He admits that he became an expert in international environmental law purely by chance. He agreed to give a paper on the legal aspects of the Chernobyl disaster at a hastily-convened conference in the US in 1986, reasoning that he was no more ignorant about the matter than anyone else. Sands will represent Hungary in an environmental case against Slovakia before the International Court of Justice.

Imitators follow Imperial lead
Article Abstract:
Science communication courses are increasing in popularity in the UK. This trend has been pioneered by Imperial College in London, with its MSc in the subject, set up because there was a perceived lack of science communicators. The course can open employment opportunities. A new course is being set up by Dublin City University in Ireland working together with Queen's University from Belfast, Northern Ireland. The Royal Society welcomes this trend and argues that all scientists should be trained to communicate.

Footprints in sands of time
Article Abstract:
Bones, teeth and shells exist in fossil form giving a historical record of life. However under certain circumstances, soft body parts can be fossilised, giving scientists the opportunity to trace the genealogy of prehistoric life. A team of palaeontologists from Leicester, Bristol and Oxford universities have discovered a deposit of soft bodied fossils of around 425 million years old, shedding light onto a 100 million year period of evolutionary history.
