London don tops list at 220,000 pounds sterling

The vice-chancellor of the London Business School, London, UK, earned 220,000 pounds sterling in 1997-98, the highest salary of all academics in publicly-funded institutions. The vice-chancellors comprised John Quelch, Michael Earl and George Bain during August 1997-July 1998. Their salaries reportedly include money earned by teaching on executive programmes, with the school also operating a performance-related pay scheme. Most of the other highest paid academics work in medical schools or at universities with medical schools.

Female university heads are amongst those doing best in the latest ranking of senior academic salaries. On average, the figures reveal that university vice-chancellors earned UKPd144, 420, with comparisons with figures from 10 years ago revealing that vice-chancellors salaries have more than doubled.
