Long live heresy
Article Abstract:
Academics in the United Kingdom are urged to continue the proud heritage of dissent that has helped define the core principles of tolerance, diversity, pluralism and civic consciousness that shape public life in the UK today. It is argued that the rise of managerial populism in the UK has eroded much of what was distinctive about public culture, sinking it into dull conformism and compliance, and that if public life is to be rebuilt into a vibrant form, then academics need to do their bit and recapture the spirit of their dissident heritage.

...think academics should take part in public inquiries
Article Abstract:
An analysis of public inquiries and why academics should be involved in them. It is argued that it is the duty of academics working in applied fields, such as criminology or security, to contribute to policy development and if they have relevant research evidence, then it is their duty to take part in public inquiries, even if they do mean the taking on of a lot of extra work.
