Lump sum 'spells trouble'

Students from poor families may end up using bursaries and loans to pay off family debts and help their parents, according to research funded by the Higher Education Academy. There is widespread concern among heads of student services that providing students from poor families significant sums of money at the start of the academic year could be 'asking for trouble'.

Unions turn on Johnson rethink
Article Abstract:
Alan Johnson, new Education Secretary, has played down remarks that top-up fees would be put back into improving salaries and conditions for staff. Academic trade unions had been delighted with the appointment of Mr Johnson following his assurances that vice-chancellors had said that at least one third of top-up fee income would be used on salaries.
