Oddities of life on the benches
Article Abstract:
The May 1 1997 UK general election resulted in many academics becoming Members of Parliament (MPs), and most are finding their new lives very different from their previous experience as lecturers. Several of the new MPs agree that the experience of standing up and lecturing to people is useful in their political roles, and the ability to think on one's feet is particularly useful. Many new MPs have found the volume of constituency business they must deal with heavy. Some miss the intellectual debate and time for thinking that they enjoyed as academics.
