An analysis of figures released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency which reveal the number of part-time academics being employed by universities and colleges in the United Kingdom and the number of staff being employed on a teaching-only basis. Birkbeck College was revealed to be the university with the highest percentage of teaching-only staff, with 73% of its staff falling into that category, followed by Soas with 66.3% and Aston with 55.9%. 20% of staff now just teach
Article Abstract:
New research conducted by the Association of University Teachers has revealed that 20 of academics are currently employed on teaching-only contracts, while at least 80% of teaching-only staff work on a part-time basis. The findings will raise concerns regarding the death of the link between research and teaching, as well as demonstrating the growing casualisation of the higher education sector.
