Peer review needs youth and clarity
Article Abstract:
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) believes that peer review is the best system for deciding on the allocation of research funds, but that some refinements are necessary. The EPSRC has established colleges of reviewers, experts in different fields who enjoy the full confidence of the research community in acting as peer reviewers, to give advice on research proposals. However it recognises that the membership of the colleges is not entirely satisfactory since the research community may chose people remarkably like themselves when asked to nominate peer reviewers.

The language instinct
Article Abstract:
The ability to speak distinguishes humans from animals and is difficult to explain in evolutionary terms. Some observers think human beings can speak because they have larger brains or as part of our learning skills. Language is not related to a general level of intelligence, but is operated by specific neural pathways in the brain. Our ability to speak is credited to natural selection by some observers.
